It's important to take action when you first notice a sign of engine trouble. If you delay getting to the shop, then the problem may quickly worsen and require increasingly expensive repairs or even engine replacement. At All Engines & Transmissions, our local mechanics are highly experienced with diagnosing and addressing engine issues. Give us a call ASAP if you notice any of the following signs of engine trouble.
The Check Engine Light Turns On
An illuminated check engine light doesn't necessarily mean that your engine is on the verge of failure. However, it's best to get diagnostics completed quickly so that any emerging issues can be addressed before they escalate. Check engine lights often illuminate due to issues with oxygen sensors, MAF sensors, ignition coils, and catalytic converters.
Common Signs of an Engine Problem
Any strange noises coming from your engine should be brought to a
mechanic's attention. Knocking and tapping noises are definitely
concerning. Such sounds could be caused by an array of problems, such as
bad rod bearings, insufficient lubrication, and a lean air/fuel
mixture. Failing spark plugs can also make a knocking noise and should
be replaced.
Power loss is another sign of trouble. When an aging engine gradually
loses a little power, it's not necessarily a red flag. But if your
engine abruptly loses a lot of power, then you could be dealing with a
major problem like worn-out pistons. However, power loss may also occur
due to a much more minor issue, like a dirty air or fuel filter.
Discolored/excessive exhaust smoke is another sign that you should get
to the shop. The smoke's color may provide clues about the underlying
issue. Blue-tinted exhaust smoke is a sign that oil is leaking. White
smoke suggests an internal coolant leak and is symptomatic of a blown
head gasket. Black smoke is an indication that too much fuel is being
burned up.
